60th China Guardian Quarterly Auctions about to kick off

The 60th Guardian Quarterly Auctions is about to open with 12 offline and 5 online sessions, presenting collectors with rich treasures.

 

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the auction, originally scheduled to be held on March 24, has been postponed. The new auction time and venue will be announced soon.

 

We remind our guests to continue to adopt protective measures and wish them good health and safety.

In this season, the department has selected 11 sessions, with nearly 3,065 lots for the vast collectors.

 

“Masterpieces by Modern Chinses Paintings and Calligraphy Artists” is a session of high-end treasures. The session will offer masterpieces of well-known modern artists such as Li Keran, Qi Baishi, Zhang Daqian, Wang Xuetao, Huang Zhou, Qi Gong, Wu Hufan, Wu Changshuo, and Lin Fengmian, and also selected works of ancient artists such as Tang Yin, Dong Qichang, Wang Yuanqi, Wang Duo, Zhang Zhao, He Shaoji, and Zuo Zongtang.

Modern and Contemporary Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy session assembles collections provided by more than 20 senior collectors. The modern and contemporary works collected by famous publisher Zu Chengcai deserve attention. The publisher used to be the editor-in-chief of the art photography department of Xinxiang Daily, and the vice-president of the Henan News and Comic Research Association. He had a deep friendship with modern and contemporary painters such as Li Kuchan, Huang Zhou and Xie Zhiliu, as evidenced by more than 20 works in this session.

Modern and Contemporary Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy session presents many sections. One includes more than 100 pieces of Xie Weiji's paintings and collections. Xie was the director of the Chinese Painting Teaching and Research Office of the School of Fine Arts in Shandong University of Art and Design. Under the tutelage of Guan Yousheng and Hei Bolong, he had a close relationship with Li Kuchan, Xie Zhiliu, He Haixia and other famous modern painters. And one section offers collections of famous performers of Peking Opera in the late Qing Dynasty.

This season the company also launches five online sessions with a total of more than 500 lots. In this season, more than 2,200 pieces are collected to form five sessions, Collection of Jiehaitang, Collection of Jundetang, Charm of the Important Porcelains & Pleasure in the Palm, Porcelain Collections of Guardian's Companions, and Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art.

 

Collection of Jiehaitang session collects porcelains of the late Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty from the Jie Hai Tang Art Museum, a private art museum dedicated to the collection, appreciation and research of ancient Chinese artworks, actively disseminating ancient Chinese traditional culture, and enthusiastic about public welfare undertakings. The leading work "blue and white dish with dragon patterns of the Qianlong Period of the Qing Dynasty" is a masterpiece of imperial kilns in the early Qing Dynasty.

Collection of Jundetang session offers porcelains for Emperor Tongzhi (1862-1875)’s wedding in the Qing Dynasty, rich in styles, presenting the beauty of the royal wares, as well as porcelains of lujun glaze, a low temperature glaze newly created by Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln in Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty. Lujun glaze is mainly composed of flowing blue glaze to form natural vertical stripes, which are densely covered with red or cyan spots. The cover lot “l(fā)ujun glazed bowl with peacock feather patterns” is worth of anticipation.

 

In the 58h China Guardian Quarterly Auctions, the Collection of Jundetang session hit a turnover rate of 100 percent, showing the collectors’ recognition and affirmation of Jundetang. This season is the second cooperation between Jundetang and China Guardian. For collectors who love imperial kiln porcelains of late Qing Dynasty and monochrome glazed porcelains, it cannot be missed.

Charm of the Important Porcelains & Pleasure in the Palm session has two sections.

 

For the Charm of the Important Porcelains section, about 100 porcelains of Ming and Qing dynasties are prepared for the collectors. “Blue and white drinking vessel with a big mouth, long neck and character patterns of Qianlong Period of the Qing Dynasty”, the cover lot of this section, is a masterpiece of imperial kiln porcelain.

 

As for the Pleasure in the Palm section, the department focuses on presenting some well-known palm porcelain pieces, including some items from well-known private collections, such as collections of Guo Keli, Li Guowei, Hu Huichun, Ma Qiante, and Xu Zhantang. “A bronze censer of late Ming and early Qing dynasties” is a highlight of the section.

Porcelain Collections of Guardian’s Companions session is a selection of porcelain collected by Guardian companions at home and abroad. The companions’ preferences vary in different regions, thus, the porcelains have different characteristics. In this season, the department collected more than 900 pieces of porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties to the Republic of China era, thanks to 45 collectors from Beijing, Tianjin, Jiangsu, Shandong, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Guangzhou, and Fujian.

 

By comparing the collections of the Shanghai Museum and the National Museum of China, the cover porcelain of the section “a blue and white plate with a house and character patterns of the Kangxi Period of the Qing Dynasty” is confirmed to be a birthday gift for the 60th birthday of Emperor Kangxi, which has high collection and research value.

It was previously collected by Ainoura Shizui, a Japanese expert on ancient inkstone research.
