The last hammer of China Guardian 53rd Quarterly Auctions dropped March 25 at Guardian Art Center in Beijing, with a total turnover of 186 million yuan ($27.7 million), 117 percent higher than the same period last year.
The Tianminlou Collection achieved a 100 percent turnover rate. The hammer price of a Gray-Blue-Green Glaze With Plate-Shaped Rim and Ruyi-Shaped Ears Modeled After Ru Ware from the Yongzheng Period of the Qing Dynasty was 9.315 million yuan, ranking at the top of the session, and also breaking the Quarterly Auctions’ highest hammer price in recent years.
Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art
In this spring, nearly 2,000 items were offered in the Quarterly Auctions-Porcelain and Works of Art, separated into five sessions. During the three-day event, it had reached 104 million yuan, with the turnover rate as high as 90 percent.
The Tianminlou Collection achieved 54 million yuan with a 100 percent turnover rate, and set the highest hammer price record in the history of Quarterly Auctions- Porcelain and Works of Art.
Other sessions also reached high turnover rates, with Porcelain Collections of Guardian's Companions at 94 percent; and Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art at 91 percent.
“Eventually, the total turnover of the Porcelain, Jade and Works of Art was over 100 million yuan, and I am very happy to see it making a good start for this year's auction,” Liu Yang, General Manager of Quarterly Auctions-Porcelain and Works of Art Department, said.

Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy
Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy featured seven sessions with more than a dozen special themes, offering nearly 2,500 lots for collectors. Its total turnover reached 69.219 million yuan.
Among all sessions, Modern Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy (Ⅰ) as well as Modern Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy (Ⅱ) had good performances, achieving turnover rates of 84 percent and 83 percent respectively. Classical Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy (Ⅰ) even reached a turnover rate of 99 percent, which also contributed to a new growth point for the market.

The Rare Books Department prepared over 600 lots this season, including manuscripts, letters from famous people and other catalogues. The turnover rate reached 75 percent, with a total turnover of 8.4583 million yuan.
Among all lots, Thousands of Hands and Eyes Avalokitesvara the Complete Clear Great Compassion Tuo Ronnie Sutra from the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty was sold at the price of 874,000 yuan, Hun Tian Yi Tong Astrological Chart for 333,500 yuan, and Letter Paper of Wenmeizhai for 322,000 yuan.
“In recent years, rare books are becoming more and more popular among collectors, especially the Buddhist-themed books,” said Song Hao, General Manager of the Rare Books Department. “In the future, the content of a book will be the main focus of the collectors.”
